2020 Fishing

As things stand at the present moment you will not be able to fish the Cod Beck for the foreseeable short term future, perhaps longer.
Most of you have renewed your membership although some have yet to renew, perhaps worried about Covoid virus.

It seems unfair to have taken membership money and not to be able to guarantee any fishing.
So, our New Chairman and Secretary have authorised me to say we are going to right-off this season.
This means that those of you who have renewed will get free membership next season. And if current circumstances improves, some fishing this season.
To those who haven’t renewed you will still be offered membership for next season when, hopefully, life becomes a little more normal.

The Angling trust is working hard to try get angling approved as solitary outdoor activity, statement from them below.

Take care, stay well and keep your distance.

Hope to see all of you next season.

Nigel

Statement from Anglian Trust.

We must all do what is required of us by the Government and work together to fight this pandemic. Therefore until further notice we should all refrain from fishing. This is about saving lives and supporting the NHS.

In regards to the current restrictions announced by the Government on Monday 23 March 2020 it is clear that the only permitted activities that have been specified are walking, running and cycling for the purpose of local daily exercise. Today we have written to the Sports Minister highlighting the benefits to both physical health and mental well being that angling provides and that we are ready and prepared to offer whatever support the government or Sport England require now or in the future to get people back fishing as soon as is safely possible.

2020 Annual General Meeting

Dear members, We are intending to hold the 2020 Sowerby Angling Society AGM on Wednesday 26th of February at the usual venue;

Thirsk and Sowerby Institute.
The Flatts
Sowerby
Thirsk
North Yorkshire
YO7 1LY

Please arrive from 7PM for 7:30 Start.
As usual we will provide a light buffet afterwards and would appreciate if those intending to come could let us know in advance so we can cater accordingly.

This will be quite an important AGM so if you can make it please do come along.

As many of you will be aware Penny and I have been wanting to sit back from running the club and allow some new blood to inject their vigour and ideas. We have had two well respected members come forward with an offer to take over the running of the club from us.
Meet Ian Pincomb and Paul Blakely both long standing members who have the long term interests of the club at heart. It is our intention to offer our resignations at the AGM and hopefully vote Paul and Ian into office. To make this transition run smoothly we have decided on a gradual handover with Penny and I still doing this years renewals /payments to land owners etc as usual and then let Ian and Paul take on these roles for the season after.
If anyone would also like to be involved in helping run the club please let us know and in what capacity you are interested. Preferably before the AGM.

Also if anyone has any issues or topics they would like to talk/debate at the AGM, please let us know so we can add them to the agenda.

The great litter clear up!

Today was part of the great Cod Beck litter clear up.  A group of us met with waders and rubbish bags  determined to clear some of the accumulation of litter from the lower water. We were quite successful; these pictures show a little of what we removed.  I had no idea it had got that bad. Thanks to Andre Richer for being concerned enough to organise it all.  Thanks to all you volunteers, you know who you are!!! Heroes each and every one of you, especially a non-member. Rose thanks for assisting.

Aquatic Invertebrate Samplers Wanted

Are you interested in freshwater invertebrates and what fish eat?
Want to learn a little more about this fascinating area and at the same time do something positive for your club?
Sowerby Angling Society is looking for a few more volunteers to assist in our regular bug monitoring program on our waters.
If you are interested full training will be provided, in return we ask for about a couple of hours of your time every couple of months  to take and record samples from specified sites. You will work in pairs and your data will feed into a national bug sampling scheme.
It can be a  good excuse to get a little extra fishing in too. Particularly as you will know what “dish of the day” is.

Please contact us using the contact page if you are interested and can spare some time.
